Marcy Shankman

Leadership Coach and Strategist for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (“District”). In this role, Marcy has primary responsibility for one-on-one coaching of the CEO and the executive leadership team (consisting of eight Chiefs); providing leadership training and professional growth for the Chiefs and Senior Leadership Team; and designing the leadership development strategy for team effectiveness at the senior leadership level.

Prior to this role, Marcy was the Vice President of Strategy and Director of Leadership Cleveland for the Cleveland Leadership Center. Major accomplishments in her strategy role included designing and leading two significant organizational change initiatives: a comprehensive, organizational assessment and evaluation initiative and the strategic planning process. As Director of Leadership Cleveland, Marcy oversaw curriculum development, program facilitation, and all functional operations of this 10-month leadership program for 65-70 senior executive leaders from diverse sectors of Cleveland’s community.

Marcy founded MLS Consulting in 2001 and continues to deliver organizational change and leadership development services as principal consultant. Areas of expertise include strategic planning and visioning; coaching; and designing and facilitating leadership workshops and retreats. Her clients have ranged from educators and school administrators in Singapore to nonprofit professionals, business executives, and higher education professionals across the country.

Marcy co-authored Emotionally Intelligent Leadership: A Guide for Students (Second Edition) (Jossey-Bass, 2015) as well as the corresponding suite of companion resources (Inventory, Facilitation and Activity Guide and Student Workbook). In addition to these publications, she has been published in peer-reviewed journals in leadership education as well as various magazines and periodicals on the subject of emotionally intelligent leadership. Marcy has served as a faculty member for the Cleveland Clinic’s Samson Global Leadership Academy and has taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses since 2003 at John Carroll University, Baldwin-Wallace College, and Case Western Reserve University.

Prior to moving to Cleveland, Marcy held professional positions with Indiana University, the Hillel Foundation, and the University of Iowa. In addition to a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William and Mary and a Master of Arts from the University of Maryland at College Park, Marcy earned her Ph.D. from Indiana University in higher education administration in 2001.

An active volunteer, Marcy serves on the boards of the MetroHealth Foundation and Facing History and Ourselves as well as the Finance and Audit Committee for the Shaker Heights School District. Marcy lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio with her husband Brett and two children, Rebecca and Joshua.
